Step Back in Time

Long House, one of Mesa Verde's most significant cliff dwellings, was excavated between 1959 and 1961 as part of the Wetherill Mesa Archeological Project. Funded by the National Park Service and National Geographic Society, this effort uncovered 15 ancient sites on Wetherill Mesa, offering deep insight into Ancestral Pueblo life.

Seasonal Access & Tours

Long House is open for exploration from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day. Take a ranger-guided, 90-minute tour—tickets are available at the Mesa Verde Visitor and Research Center prior to park entry.

Located on Wetherill Mesa in the park’s western section, Long House is reached via a 12-mile scenic drive off the main park road near Far View Terrace. Vehicles must be under 25 feet and 8,000 lbs due to road restrictions. Along the way, enjoy turnouts, scenic overlooks, and interpretive signs highlighting forest recovery and geology. 

At the end of the route, you’ll find restrooms, a snack bar, an orientation area, and a ranger ready to guide your adventure.
