Step Back at Step House
Step into the past at Step House, one of Mesa Verde’s most intriguing cliff dwellings, located on Wetherill Mesa. Open from Memorial Day weekend to Labor Day, this unique site reveals two distinct periods of Ancestral Pueblo history within the same alcove.
One side showcases remnants from a Modified Basketmaker-era dwelling dating back to CE 626, while the other side features a Classic Pueblo masonry pueblo from CE 1226. You’ll hike a ¾-mile self-guided loop, with a 100-foot descent and ascent, taking you through centuries of history at your own pace.
How to Get to Step House
Access Step House via a 12-mile winding road (note: vehicles must be under 25 feet and 8,000 lbs.) Rangers are available on-site between 9:00 am and 3:45 pm to answer questions. You can explore Step House before or after a Long House tour, and we recommend setting aside 3–4 hours to fully enjoy the quiet beauty and archaeological richness of Wetherill Mesa.
