Leave No Trace at Mesa Verde
While Leave No Trace provides a framework to help us decrease our impact on the natural environment, some areas and activities have additional considerations. Keep the following tips in mind while exploring Mesa Verde National Park.
Stay on Trails
Always stay on trails and avoid venturing off established paths to protect the vulnerable vegetation. Trampling fragile plants can lead to irreparable damage, disrupting the delicate balance of the ecosystem and diminishing the park's natural beauty.Pets are prohibited from hiking trails.
Respect the History
Mesa Verde was previously the home of the Pueblo tribe, who built homes into the cliffsides. Please be respectful of the unique historical architecture by keeping your exploration within the designated areas. Never mark, carve or draw on rocks, as this negatively impacts the park’s preservation efforts and is difficult to remove.
Protect the Dark-Sky
Mesa Verde National Park is a Designated Dark-Sky Park, which means gazing up at the stars at night is an incredible experience. When outside at night, consider using amber lighting (rather than white) to protect our natural dark sky and the wildlife that thrive in these settings.
Avoid Plastic
Avoid using single-use, disposable plastics in the park. By opting for reusable alternatives, you’ll help preserve the environment for future generations and protect the wildlife that calls the park home. Please carry out what you bring on your adventure; and remember every small action counts in maintaining the beauty and ecological balance of our park.
Think Before you Snap
Give some thought to what your photos may encourage others to do. Consider the platform you have and the people you reach when posting about the outdoors.

Use Transportation Alternatives
Consider how you are getting around the destination. Utilize transportation alternatives such as shuttles instead of using your own vehicle – this will cut down on traffic as well as emissions. Whenever possible, try to use “human powered” means of getting around too!
